New generation of artificial tears arrives in Brazil with the launch of Thealoz Duo, the only one with intra and extracellular action for the treatment of dry eye

Updated on 06/12/2023

With an unprecedented and exclusive formulation that guarantees faster and more effective action, the artificial tear arrives in the country in an initiative by Genom, a business unit of União Química

São Paulo (SP), May 2023 – Genom, the prescription-only unit of the national pharmaceutical company União Química, a leader in ophthalmology in Brazil, is bringing to Brazil the exclusive and unprecedented artificial tear Thealoz Duo. The product is an innovation in the sector, as it combines the exclusive active ingredient trehalose with sodium hyaluronate, which generates hydration, lubrication and protection of the ocular surface, being the solution for people who suffer from the symptoms of dry eye disease.

Artificial tears have an exclusive formula that combines two active ingredients, ensuring intra and extracellular action. Trehalose is a natural saccharide that protects and stabilizes eye cells, while sodium hyaluronate is a molecule that helps maintain hydration of eye tissues1.

“The use of trehalose with hyaluronic acid is an important option for different conditions related to the treatment of Dry Eye and optimization of the ocular surface. The combination of these two ingredients in artificial tears acts synergistically in controlling symptoms and can be applied to accelerate the healing of procedures that destabilize the ocular surface, such as corneal and intraocular refractive procedures,” says ophthalmologist Dr. Renato Ambrósio Júnior, president of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and the Refractive Surgery Alliance (RSA), adjunct professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), affiliated professor of the strictu sensu postgraduate program at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and lato sensu of the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology (SBO) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).

Thealoz Duo is preservative-free and its bottle uses the technological Abak system, which prevents contamination. The product can be used with contact lenses, restoring the ability to maintain the tear film in balance, regardless of changes in the external environment, in the long term. “Abak technology allows the instillation of eye drops through a membrane with a 0.2 µm filter, which prevents contamination of the solution by external bacteria”, reinforces Dr. Renato.

Dry eye syndrome is a condition that is increasingly present throughout the world. According to the Brazilian Association of Dry Eye Sufferers (Apos), between 13 and 24% of Brazilians, equivalent to 18 million people, suffer from the disease in Brazil. “With this formulation, Thealoz Duo provides immediate and long-lasting relief for dry eye symptoms, including irritation, burning, itching and redness. In addition, the formula is free of preservatives, which makes it safe for regular and prolonged use”, highlights Dr. Monica Alves, ophthalmologist and professor at the University of Campinas (Unicamp)

“We are excited to bring Thealoz Duo to the Brazilian market,” emphasizes Gustavo Almeida (Director of the Genom Business Unit). “We are reinforcing our innovative character and leadership in ophthalmology, as we have done in so many other prescription segments. This is not the first time that we at Genom/União Química have brought a new generation of tears to the market. Thealoz Duo reinforces our leadership in the ophthalmology segment,

we want to offer patients an effective, safe and modern option to treat the symptoms of dry eyes, improving their quality of life and well-being.”

Thealoz Duo is available in pharmacies across the country, however it is recommended that in case of symptoms of Dry Eye or any other ophthalmological condition an ophthalmologist be consulted.

“Genom is a leader in the ophthalmology segment, as it has always been at the forefront of innovations for dry eye, in addition to being committed to evolution and a complete portfolio. With the arrival of Thealoz Duo, we have an important opportunity to further elevate Genom in the ophthalmology market,” concludes Gustavo.
